Background of Kobor Natok


Munir Chowdhury was one of the most prominent and influential Bangla writers of the 20th century. He was born in 1925 in Manikganj, Dhaka. He studied English literature at Dhaka University and later obtained a master's degree from Harvard University. He taught English at Dhaka University and became the head of the department in 1958.


Munir Chowdhury was also a social and political activist who opposed the colonial and dictatorial regimes in Bangladesh. The drama was banned by the government soon after its premiere, as it exposed the corruption and brutality of the military regime. However, it continued to be performed secretly by various theatre groups and became a symbol of resistance and protest.


Themes and Characters of Kobor Natok


Kobor Natok is a tragicomedy that portrays the life of a middle-class family in Dhaka. The family consists of four members: Shafiq, the father; Latifa, the mother; Shumon, the son; and Shila, the daughter. Shafiq is a government employee who is honest and loyal to his job. Latifa is a housewife who is devoted to her husband and children. Shumon is a college student who is idealistic and rebellious. Shila is a schoolgirl who is innocent and naive.


The drama begins with Shafiq returning home from his office with a letter from his boss. The letter informs him that he has been transferred to a remote area as a punishment for refusing to take bribes. Shafiq is shocked and dismayed by this news, as he has always been faithful to his duty. He decides to appeal to his boss and asks for his family's support.


However, he soon realizes that his family is not as supportive as he expected. Latifa is afraid of losing their comfortable life in Dhaka and urges him to accept the transfer or take bribes like others. Shumon is disgusted by his father's cowardice and conformity and accuses him of being a hypocrite. Shila is indifferent to her father's situation and only cares about her own interests.


The drama shows how Shafiq's family gradually falls apart under the pressure of the corrupt system. Shafiq becomes isolated and depressed as he fails to get justice or sympathy from anyone. Latifa becomes greedy and selfish as she tries to secure her future by bribing various officials. Shumon becomes radicalized and joins an underground movement that plans to assassinate Ayub Khan.
